A lot of people, teens or adults suffer from acne, some for just few a few days in a year but there are a lot who suffer from acne throughout their teenage or adulthood. People spend lot of money on medicines and prescriptions to treat that. But thankfully we have a lot of homemade natural remedies to treat acne and reduce the scars from pimples and get rid of blemishes. I will be sharing some of the most effective DIY homemade acne mask recipes which can be easily made with most ingredients from the kitchen. The benefit of using such homemade acne masks are they are chemical free, easy to make, costs less and gives your skin healthy glow and treats scars as well.

1. Salt Mask

Salt Mask for Acne

Salt is an effective natural cleanser, which reduces the excess oil from your skin to a considerable amount, thereby leaving your skin oil-free and acne-free.

What you need:

  • Epsom Salt / Sea Salt
  • Warm Water

How to Make it: 

Mix 1 teaspoon of either Epsom salt or sea salt in 2 teaspoons of warm water. Warm water will help salt dissolve faster. Wash your face and pat dry. Once the salt is fully dissolved apply it on your face and leave it for 20-30 minutes. Rinse it off with lukewarm water and follow your skin care routine.

My Tip for this mask: 

After I wash and moisturize my face, i apply this Epsom salt water on my face with cotton ball and let it dry. If is see any white residue after its dry i just wipe it off with clean towel and apply my makeup over it. So that way it stays on my face all day long until I follow my night time skin care routine. And I pretty much use it in the morning and at night. You can make extra and store it in a clean glass jar or plastic bottle.

 

2. Cinnamon and Honey Mask

Honey is a secret ingredient for beautiful skin. It not only has antibiotic and antiseptic properties that kill the acne causing bacteria but helps lock in moisture keeping you skin soft and lustrous. It also helps with spots, scarring, marks and blemishes. Cinnamon  is a natural antibacterial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and provides natural micro-dermabrasion benefits to acne sufferers. When both these super ingredients are combined they treat acne effectively without irritating the skin.

What you need:

  • Honey
  • Cinnamon Powder

How to Make it: 

Combine two teaspoons of honey and one teaspoon of cinnamon until a all lumps are dissolved. Wash your face and pat dry it. Apply the mask to your face (either spot treatment or entire face). Leave it for 15-20 mins and then rinse it off. Follow your skin care routine.

My Tip for this mask: 

After 2-3 minutes from the application on your face the warmth from the face will start melting the honey making it more liquidy, so you will see it kinda dripping from your face. Keep a paper towel handy in case you need to wipe off the extra drips. You can add few drop of lemon to the mask. Lemon has natural bleaching properties which can help get rid of the acne scars faster. Feel free to use it 1-2 times a week if you have a lot of acne. Its safe to store the extra in a glass jar in case if you weren’t able to use up all of it at once.

 

3. Banana Mask

As now we know honey is an important ingredient for our acne treatment mask we are going to use it again. Bananas are not only beneficial when you eat them, they not hydrate and moisturize the skin when applied on face but also treat acne. Lemons are natural bleaching agents and they also reduce the excess oil on face, so this mask along with hydrating the skin will fight pimples and reduce the scarring on skin.

What you need:

  • Honey
  • Ripe banana
  • Lemon juice

How to Make it: 

Completely mash up one ripe banana, then add 2 tablespoon of honey to it.  Add 1 teaspoon lemon juice to that mask. Wash your face and pat dry. Apply the mask on your face and leave it for 15-20 minutes. Rinse it off with warm water. Follow your skin care routine.

My Tip for this mask: 

I like to use this mask cold. So before I mash the banana up, i keep it in the fridge for 10-20 minutes. You can either do that or you can make the mask and then keep it in the fridge for 15-20 minutes. I feel like the cold mask tightens my pores.

 

4. Egg White Mask

Eggs are packed with proteins and vitamins. Eggs whites help fight acne and reduce the scars. The proteins in the egg aids in healing the skin and helps rebuild healthy skin cells.

What you need:

  • Eggs

How to Make it: 

Take 1 – 2 eggs and separate the whites from the yolks and whisk until frothy. Wash your face and pat dry. Apply a thin layer on your face and allow it to dry a few minutes. Repeat the application to make it 3 to 4 layers in total. Let the mask dry for 15 – 20 minutes then rinse it off.  Follow your skin care routine.

My Tip for this mask: 

If you have some extra egg whites left, apply it on your hair. Let is sit for 15 – 20 minutes and then shampoo. Protein is good for hair and this mask will make your hair stronger and shinier. Do not use this mask if you are allergic to eggs.

 

5. Baking Soda Mask

Baking soda a very common ingredient found in every kitchen, also chemically know as sodium bicarbonate, fights acne causing bacteria because of its midl antiseptic properties. It also dries up excess oil which can clog pores and also provides a mild microdermabrasion to remove dead skin cells.

What you need:

  • Baking Soda
  • Water

How to Make it: 

Take baking soda and water in equal parts, mix them until a thick paste is formed. Make sure all the lumps are broken as it can be harsh on skin. Wash your face and pat dry. Apply the paste all over your face. Wait for 10 – 20 minutes and then rinse your face with cold water. Follow your skin care routine.

My Tip for this mask: 

You can either use this recipe as mask or as a scrub. When using it as scrub, apply the paste all over you face and with gentle circular motions scrub your face for 1-2 minutes. Rinse your face with cold water and follow your skin care routine.

 

6. Yogurt mask

Yogurt acts as a natural astringent, a mild bleaching agent and full of nutrients. It works wonders on skin and nourishes it from within and outside.  Honey has antibiotic and antiseptic properties that kill the acne causing bacteria but helps lock in moisture keeping you skin soft and lustrous.

What you need:

  • Yogurt
  • Honey

How to Make it: 

Take 1 teaspoon of honey and 1 teaspoon of yogurt. Mix them well until a consistent paste is formed. Wash your face and pat dry. Apply a thick layer on your face and let it dry for 15 – 20 mins. Rinse it off with warm water. Follow your skin care routine.

My Tip for this mask: 

You can add turmeric powder ( 1/4 teaspoon) to this mask. Turmeric is know for its antibacterial, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. It does wonders on skin, it fights acne causing bacteria, minor skin irritations and lightens acne scars over time. But make sure turmeric is can stain your clothes, nails and light staining to skin. So when adding turmeric you can this mask as night, you can get 2 washes before starting a new day, one at night and one in the following morning. This can remove any light yellow stains from nails and skin. Or you can soak a cotton ball in milk and rub it on the stained areas. Use this mask two to three days a week.

 

7. Oatmeal mask

Oatmeal soothes the skin and calms the acne down by reducing inflammation and redness.

What you need:

  • Oatmeal
  • Water

How to Make it: 

Make a paste of oatmeal and water. Wash your face and pat dry. Apply it all over your face and let it sit for 20 – 30 mins. Rinse it off with warm water. Follow your skin care routine.

My Tip for this mask: 

You can add honey ( 1 tablespoon) to this mask. Adding honey boosts the effectivity of the mask by adding honey’s anti-inflammatory and anti bacterial properties.

 

8. Honey and Avocado Mask

Avocado is one of those superfood that is not only delicious but is healthy and beneficial in so many ways. Its full of mono unsaturated fatty acids which, when applied to face gives a beautiful glow by moisturizing it. Honey as we know by know helps fight acne causing bacteria.

What you need:

  • Avocado
  • Honey

How to Make it: 

Take an avocado, scoop it off and mash it using a fork. Add 1 tablespoon of honey to it. Wash your face and pat dry. Apply it all over your face and let it sit for 20 – 30 mins. Rinse it off with warm water. Follow your skin care routine.

My Tip for this mask: 

If you have left over from this mask apply it on your neck, chest and hands before heading to the shower. Your body will thank you for it!

 

9. Cucumber and Oats Mask

Cucumber has mild astringent properties and has the same pH level as the skin. It nourishes the skin and clears off acne and blemishes. It helps the calm and soothe the skin and aids in skin’s natural healing process. Oats absorbs any excess and unwanted acne causing oils from the skin and acts as a mild exfoliant. Lemons has natural bleaching properties and helps lighten acne scars, dark spots and blemishes.

What you need:

  • Cucumber
  • Oats
  • Lemon

How to Make it: 

Take a small cucumber, put it in a blender and blend it well. Add two tablespoons of oats and juice of half a lemon. Make a smooth paste. Wash your face and pat dry. Apply it all over your face, massage your face in gentle circular motions and then let it sit for 20 – 30 mins. Rinse it off with warm water. Follow your skin care routine.

My Tip for this mask: 

As we honey reduces inflammation and fights the acne causing bacteria, you can add 1 tablespoon of honey to it as well.

 

10. Aloe Vera and Honey Mask

Aloe Vera and Honey Acne Mask

Aloe vera has soothing properties and helps healing acne by reducing redness and inflammation. It also helps fading acne scars over time. Honey with its moisturizing properties nourishes skin while fight acne bacteria.

What you need:

  • Aloe Vera
  • Honey

How to Make it: 

Cut a small section of aloe vera leaf (about 2 inches) and scrap out all the gel from that leaf. Add 1 tablespoon of honey to it and mix it well. Wash your face and pat dry. Apply it all over your face and let it sit for 15 – 20 mins. Rinse it off with warm water. Follow your skin care routine.

My Tip for this mask: 

You can skip the honey is this and just apply aloe vera gel directly to your face. It also reduces wrinkles as it can penetrate to deeper skin layers providing nutrients to skin and it stimulates and increase the production of collagen and elastin in the skin, reversing the age clock!
